Prior to 1888, this magical black drink was restricted to wealthy people and the members of the aristocracy; it was poor people’s dream in the cold nights of winter, until Thomas Lipton came up with a charming tea recipe, to erase this reality and turn it upside down. He struggled for a long time to make tea available for all people without exceptions.
The Scottish businessman’s beginning with Lipton started when the purchase value of tea declined, so he changed his action to filling and selling tea and was keen on importing Sri Lanka’s tea, famous for its quality; he sold it for little money in the shops he owned around the world, which back then were 300 shops. After this, he achieved success and called his product Lipton Tea, which achieved a rapid spread in Europe and the Unites States of America without any type of competition.
Lipton’s Passion of Sports Helped in Spreading His Brand
Lipton accumulated a huge wealth through selling his new product, but he was a smart man when he utilized his passion for sports championships to market his product, for he won “America’s Cup of Yachts” five times between 1899 and 1930. He also donated to sponsor the championship between Argentina and Uruguay teams, to honor him and his product, two championships carried his name Sir Lipton Cup in 1908 and 1911.
Lipton’s passion for tea had no boundaries, and the relationship between them throughout years deepened by offering a variety of distinct products, such as green tea, ice tea, tea latte, discovery tea, tea with refreshing flavors, and another with free of calories flavors. What enhanced the products singularity was the integration between the two companies of Lever Brothers and Unie Margarine, from which Unielever company was created. The latter combined a number of pioneering brands active in manufacturing many food related materials and commodities; Lipton was on top of these companies, such as Lux, Vaseline, Dove, Close Up and others.
Today, Unielever company ranks fifty-six among the most successful companies across the world with a value of 143.9 billion dollars, and it achieves annual sells of 58.31dollars.
Between Worms abs Cancerous Bags..Many Challenges Face Lipton
Throughout its history, Lipton faced many challenges, the most prominent of which was in 2011, when it was accused that the paper tea bags it produces contain Epichlorohydrin which cause the cancerous MCPD-3 material upon interacting with boiled water. The mother group Unielever, however, denied these accusations, stressing that the paper used for the bags is totally safe and that all its products correspond to the adopted international laws and universal health conditions, such as US Food and Drugs Administration and the decrees of the European Union.
A few years later, a client based in Dubai alleged finding alive worms inside the Lipton lemon flavored green tea bags, but the company bashed this rumor and published a video on Facebook in which it confirmed that theses worms were small pieces of lemon peel, which melt if they were added to hot water. This was confirmed by the management of the Food Safety in Dubai and criticized the behavior of the client, which participated in spreading the misguiding information which without a scientific proof negatively affected the company’s products.
Twinings, Lipton’s Major Competitor at an International Level
Lipton is living a wide competition with many other international brands, Twinings is at the top of them; it is a British company and the first at the level of the world in terms of tea production. It started working in London since 1706, and its branch there is still active. The different types of its tea are invading the world. There is also Dilmah, which is Sri Lanka’s most recognized international brand of tea and started working since 1974, owning more than 92 branches around the world that offer different types of fresh flavored tea.
The famous competitors also include the English Yorshire brand, which is one of the most ancient brands in producing tea, for it launched its products for the first time in 1886. Today, it has expanded in producing and selling coffee products. One of the most famous types it produces is the mixture of the grand golden tea.
A New Technique for the Production of Lipton Tea in Kenia Farms
Despite the many competitors, Lipton is on the top of the tea producing brands in the middle east and in Northern Africa. Lipton’s interest focuses on creating brands that attract clients and satisfy their needs. Lately, it had offered a developed recipe through its own singular technology in the world of tea production.
